Drøbak & Oscarsborg Fortress
On the morning of 9 April 1940, a German invasion fleet sailed up the Oslofjord in darkness to seize the capital and capture the King. At Oscarsborg — a small island fortress most travellers never see — an ageing commander fired two nineteenth-century cannons. The flagship Blücher went down. The invasion stalled, the King escaped, and Norway's gold left the country.
Your private car carries you south along the fjord to Drøbak, a village of white timber houses and narrow lanes at the water's edge. From there a short ferry crossing takes you out to the island itself — where you can stand on the ramparts and put your hand on the guns that changed Norwegian history.
